What’s the best RV rental for a family of four?

Wondering which RV rental is right for your family’s road trip adventure? Whether you prioritize space, comfort, or convenience, read on to learn about the best RV rental options for families of four.

Start with your family’s travel preferences

We’re often asked to recommend the best RV for families. The answer depends on several factors, from sleeping arrangements to how much gear you’ll bring.

THINGS to CONSIDER FOR A FAMILY RV RENTAL

  • Do your kids mind sleeping in the same bed?

  • Are you comfortable with you or your kids sleeping in a bed accessed by a ladder?

  • Do you and your spouse require a queen-sized bed or is a full-sized bed okay?

  • Do you plan to cook meals in the RV? Or will you mainly have coffee and snacks in the RV, and eat out for meals?

  • Will you eat meals in the RV due to weather or comfort? Or will most meals be eaten outside the RV at the campsite?

  • Do you plan to camp at campgrounds with full hook-ups or will you dry camp?

  • Is it important to have air conditioning?

  • Do you want separate areas to hang out inside the RV or do you want a lot of togetherness?

  • Will you and other family members be comfortable with a small wet-bath for showers or will you prefer a full-size bathroom with a separate shower?

  • If you stay at campgrounds, will you and other family members be comfortable using the campground bathrooms for showering?

  • How much stuff will you bring, including clothing and adventure gear?

Thor Quantum LC28 - maximum space and comfort

Best for: Families who want extra space for sleeping, eating, cooking and bathing.

With a large slide-out (when parked), this 30' Class C motorhome is perfect for families who want a lot of extra space, premium interior amenities, and a fairly easy to drive RV.

Thor Quantum LC28 Features

Sleeps 6 - includes a queen bed suite; an over-cab queen/full bed reached by ladder, a fold-out sofa bed, and a convertible dinette.

Bathroom - full size separate shower, flushable toilet, sink and toiletry storage. The larger gray and black tanks mean emptying the tanks will be infrequent.

Kitchen - large refrigerator/freezer, microwave, oven, sink, ample storage and prep space

Interior Dining- the slide-out creates a large dinette area for dining and hanging out

Interior Living Area - 4 areas to hang out: over cab bunk, large dinette, jack-knife sofa, and rear bedroom suite.

Storage - plenty of interior space for clothing, etc. plus exterior storage compartments

Driving and Parking - takes a little getting used to, but this RV is easy to drive. Parking in small spaces will be difficult and requires some patience. Some national and state park campgrounds have length limits—always check with the parks you plan to visit. Private campgrounds can easily accommodate the Quantum.

Slideout - yes

Air Conditioning - yes, both the cab and “house” have AC.

Generator - yes, the gas generator will allow you to camp off grid.

Winnebago View - comfort and drivability

Best for: Families wanting plenty of space, high end amenities, and a very driveable RV.

Our 25-foot View models (the J and D) offer slightly different sleeping arrangements—both are premium and comfortable. The View D offers a queen Murphy bed which can be converted to a sofa for relaxing. The J offers a full-sized bed.

Winnebago View features

Sleeps 4 or 5 - includes a queen Murphy bed in the View D (or a full bed in the View J), a spacious banquette dining area that converts to a bed, and one over-cab bunk reached by a small ladder.

Bathroom - full-size separate shower, flushable toilet, sink and toiletry storage.

Kitchen - large refrigerator/freezer, convection microwave, stainless sink, ample storage and prep space. The large water tanks reduces the frequency of emptying them.

Interior Dining Space - a large slide-out to use when parked creates a large dinette space for dining and hanging out

Interior Living Area - 3 areas to hang out – the over cab bunk, large dinette, and a sofa in the D model or rear bed in the J model.

Storage - plenty of interior space for clothing and personal items, plus exterior storage compartments.

Driving and Parking - the View takes a little getting used to, but is easy to drive. Parking in small spaces will be challenging and requires some patience. Some national and state park campgrounds have length limits—always check with the parks you plan to visit. Private campgrounds can easily accommodate the View.

Slideout - yes

Air Conditioning - yes, both the cab and “house” have AC.

Generator - yes, the propane generator means you can camp off grid.

Winnebago EKKO - compact fun

Best for: Families with older kids (they’ll love the pop-up rooftop sleeping area) and want an easy-to-drive RV.

The 23-foot Winnebago EKKO is a hybrid between a smaller Class B and a large Class C RV. Its moderate size combined with premium interior features makes it a customer favorite.

Winnebago EKKO features

Sleeps 4 - includes a rear double twin bed (that converts into a king) and a pop-up full/queen rooftop bed reached by an interior 5-foot ladder. For concerns about small children falling from ladders or bunks, kids can go in the rear twin beds and parents can sleep in the pop-up bed. The pop-up area does not have heat or air conditioning if you travel in extreme weather conditions.

Bathroom - the EKKO has a cool pivoting toilet that swings away when the shower is in use. While it’s a little larger than the Solis bathroom and has a sink, this is a small bathroom. Families needing more space should consider campgrounds with shower facilities or rent the View or Quantum. The smaller gray and black tanks will need nearly daily emptying.

Kitchen - small but efficient kitchen with a sink, a midsize refrigerator, two burner cooktop, microwave, and a fair amount of food storage space.

Interior Dining Space - the small removable table behind the driver seat can seat three people. The Ekko is great for eating meals outside.

Interior Living Area - 4 small spaces to hang out – the driver and passenger seat area (both seats swivel to be rear-facing), the over cab bunk, the rear twin or king suite, and the pop-up area on the roof.

Storage - modest interior and ample exterior storage space—pack light for your trip.

Driving and Parking - the EKKO requires a bit more attention and planning when navigating tight spaces or making turns, but it offers easy maneuverability compared to larger RVs, thanks to its size and AWD. Some national and state park campgrounds have length limits—always check with the parks you plan to visit. Private campgrounds can easily accommodate the EKKO.

Slideout - no, but there is a pop-up area accessed via an interior ladder.

Air Conditioning - both the cab and “house” have AC. The screened-in pop-up area above does not have climate control and is best suited for moderate weather.

Generator - no, but the lithium ion batteries will power low-volt outlets and appliances (excluding the air conditioner for long periods of time).

Winnebago Solis P and PX - economical adventure

Best for: Families seeking an easy-to-drive, economical RV rental with just enough creature comforts to take the edge off of camping!

Both the Solis P and PX are nice and affordable campervans that are easy to drive, easy to park, and offer a lot of togetherness that brings your family closer to nature.

Sleeps 4 - includes a rear fold down full/queen-sized bed and a pop-up full/queen rooftop bed reached by an interior 5-foot ladder. For concerns about small children falling from ladders or bunks, kids can go in the rear twin beds and parents can sleep in the pop-up bed. The pop-up area does not have heat or air conditioning, making it challenging to sleep in extreme weather conditions.

Bathroom - the Solis has a small wet bath—when you shower, you are sitting or standing in front of the toilet. For more space, an outdoor handheld showerhead is available at the rear of the vehicle. Though there’s no bathroom sink, use the kitchen sink for washing hands and brushing teeth. Families needing more space should consider campgrounds with shower facilities. The smaller gray and black tanks will mean nearly daily emptying.

Kitchen - a sink, a small refrigerator, a two burner cooktop but no microwave. There is space for a reasonable amount of food storage.

Interior Dining Space - the small removable table behind the driver seat can seat three people. The Solis is best suited for eating meals outside.

Interior Living Area - the driver and passenger seat area (both seats swivel to be rear-facing), the full/queen bed, and the pop-up area on the roof.

Storage - the Solis PX has 3 extra feet of rear interior gear storage space. The Solis P offers more modest interior storage space. There are no exterior storage compartments—pack light for a trip in the Solis P.

Driving and Parking - the Solis drives like a large SUV and is easy to maneuver. You will fit in most car parking spaces. We are not aware of any parks with length limits that would limit the Solis in campgrounds or roads.

Slideout - no, but it has a pop-up area on the rooftop.

Air Conditioning - the Solis PX has both the cab and “house” have AC. The Solis P only has cab air conditioning. On both models, the screened-in pop-up area does not have climate control and is best suited for moderate weather.

Generator - the PX has a generator, while the P does not.
